Belvoir Theatre

I really love the Belvoir Theatre in Surry Hills http://www.belvoir.com.au. The B-sharp productions I’ve seen have been brilliant – set in a small, intimate space you practically feel in the play itself. I recently saw The Sweetest Thing, which was an outstanding performance – 80 mins without a break and the time flew by. They also have great headline productions which pull in great Australian actors and actresses. Plus, if you’re under 30 years of age, they have the 30-Down Club, which gives you great discounts on prices. Oh, and if you fancy cheap eats before hand check out The Shakespeare Hotel round the corner.

Sculptures by the sea

If you haven’t already, check out the Sculptures by the Sea exhibition that is scattered along the coast from Bondi to Tamarama beach in Sydney. I’ve never seen such a great variety of scultpures in as stunning a setting. And after miserable days of continious rain the sun came out. Certainly raised a big smile on my face.

Some of my favorite scultpures:

How important is ‘stuff’

I just watched ‘The Story of Stuff’ short video by Annie Leonard http://www.storyofstuff.com/. It’s 20 mins, but packed with interesting info on what our world is consuming. We replace, update, throw away on a massive scale and don’t ever really think about where it comes from or what happens to it once we’ve finished with it.

Some scary facts:

  • If everyone consumed natural resources at the same rate as the US, we’d need another 3-5 planets to sustain our current way of life
  • We’ve used 1/3 of the world’s natural resources
  • 80% of the world’s forests have been destroyed
  • Only 1% of stuff we buy is still in use 6 months later. 99% is trashed!

Wouldn’t it be nice if brands designed everything to last, we bought less and recycled more. Pipe dream??

It’s the little things that add up to a greener world

Following on from Glovelove, a cute new idea from Green Thing called Save. Send in unwanted or unloved t-shirts, which are then customised with their saved story i.e. ‘Saved from bad taste’ and sold on for approx 20 pounds. All revenue goes back into the not-for-profit org, whose aim is to help us all lead greener lives. Imagine what other items that we chuck in the bin that could be put to a greener use…
